Captain Briggs and wife are both natives of Providence, R. I. Mrs. Briggs came to Decatur when she was four years old, and here she and Captain Briggs were married many years ago. They moved to Chicago and lived there for thirty-four years, going from there to Pensacola, Fla. where they conducted a hotel for a number of years. They have lived in Decatur since 1913.
Captain Briggs is survived by his wife and one daughter. Mrs. Charles A Winter of Great Neck, Long Island, N. Y. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Mary F. Barber of Decatur, and a niece, Mrs. Mary F. Knowles of Decatur. The body was removed to the Dawson & Co. undertaking establishment and prepared for burial.

Before Mr. Briggs was married, he was a seaman on merchant vessels in the Atlantic ocean. He later became captain of several sailing vessels that plied in coastwide trade. He crossed the Atlantic many times as the first officer of different vessels. After his marriage, he sailed principally on boats on the Great Lakes.
