Norma C. Franzen's zest for playing cards was shared with her many friends. Son Stuart Franzen said his mother looked forward to the bridge games she played for many years in Valparaiso and Shorewood Forest. While she was an avid bridge player, Mrs. Franzen also loved playing golf with Erwin, her husband of 50 years.

Stuart said they were members of the Valparaiso Country Club and were very active in the golf leagues.

The couple were such enthusiastic players they took golfing vacations in Hawaii, Europe and Puerto Rico.

"They played all over the world," he said. "They really enjoyed themselves."

Mrs. Franzen, 71, a Valparaiso resident since 1974, passed away May 25 at Porter Memorial Hospital.

Stuart said his mother didn't care about material possessions. "She could have had any kind of car," he said. "But she drove a 25-year-old car."

What mattered to Mrs. Franzen was helping family, friends and neighbors. She always volunteered to cook meals or help out in any way she could. "Anytime anyone was in need, she was there for them," he said. Mrs. Franzen was a former resident of Lansing, Ill. She was a member of the Lansing Women's Club and the Logansport Order of the Eastern Star. Stuart said his mother enjoyed cooking, with soups being among her specialties. She also liked to complete crossword puzzles. "It's amazing how much she did," Stuart said. "She did a lot for many people."

Mrs. Franzen is survived by husband Erwin Franzen of Valparaiso; sons Glenn (Young) Franzen of Valparaiso, Eric (Donna) Franzen of Breckinridge, Colo., and Stuart (Susan) Franzen of Chesterton; sister Marilyn (Cal) Coy of Chapin, S.C.; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be held at the Moeller Funeral Home in Valparaiso today, May 29, at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Doug Hadley officiating. Interment will take place at Kimball Cemetery in Liberty Township.
