James Edward Ellis was born Oct. 23, 1916, to K.L. and Mae E. Yount Ellis in Doniphan, Mo. James made the most important decision in his life at age 9 when he became a Christian and was baptized at First Baptist Church in Harviell, Mo. At the age of 16, James joined the circus, where he performed as a clown in a high-wire act, after which he toured the country with legendary circus man Mel Hall. During his tour, he often found a seat upon 12-foot unicycles. James went on to serve in the U.S. Army, where he enjoyed boxing in his spare time. James worked for 40 years in Beaumont for Charles Hoffer's Men's Clothing Store.
James was preceded in death by both parents; brothers, Herman, Raymond, John and Eugene; and sister, Clara Mae.
Survivors: Wife, Lucille Ellis; son, James Ellis Jr. and wife, Ruth, of Mesquite; daughters, Freda Burks and husband, Cecil, of Springtown, Peggy Roche and husband, Steve, of Flippin, Ark., and Mary Peterson and husband, Ernie, of Southlake; grandchildren, Sharon Lyons and husband, George, Donna Fulgham and husband, Steve, David Ellis, Bobby Monk and wife, Lu, Bridgette Nygard, Angela Mueller and Jennifer Peterson; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
