John F. Monroe, a resident of Allen County, Indiana, mustered in to service June 14, 1861, as First Sergeant, Co C 15th Indiana Infantry. He was promoted and commissioned Second Lieutenant, Co C, July 24, 1862, and mustered Dec. 2, 1862. Promoted and commissioned Captain, Co C, Nov. 1, 1862, and mustered March 8, 1863. Killed in battle of "Mission Ridge" on Nov 25, 1863. In the pension record, it states that Captain Monroe died in hospital at Chattanooga, of wounds received Nov. 26, 1863.
His widow, Julia Maher Monroe, received a widow's pension. They were married in Erie County, Pennsylvania. Julia died January 30, 1922, at Erie County, Pennsylvania. No children were named in the pension file.
