Died, at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1908, at her residence, South Grand boulevard, Miss Alice May Southwick, aged 31 years, 11 months and 2 days. The funeral will be held this afternoon at the residence. The interment will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Miss Southwick has been ill for many weeks. She was born in Ball township, Sangamon county, Nov. 26, 1876, being the youngest child of William and Sarah Southwick. She joined the Christian church at the age of 11 years.

Upon coming to Springfield about nine years ago with her sister, Mrs. R. L. Leaverton, with whom she made her home, she united with the Douglas Avenue Methodist church, at that time called Prentice church. Miss Southwick lived a very unselfish life and might well have been called "The Children's Friend." Ever since girlhood, as teacher of Sunday classes, superintendent of the Junior league, and, for many years immediately preceding her death, as superintendent of the primary department for the Douglas Avenue Sunday school, she has given her life to the religious instruction of little children, a kind of work in which she was very proficient. In her long and painful illness, Miss Southwick displayed the most patient, fearless and peaceful spirit. At the beginning of her last illness she wrote: "Like as a weary child, when evening shadows creep about the home nest, slips down in to the mother arms, and rests its sleepy head on her dear heart - so I, when life's short day is over, would creep into the sheltering comfort of my heavenly Father's presence, and the rest divine for aching hearts and travel-weary feet."

The burial will take place at Oak Ridge cemetery. - Illinois State Journal, Springfield, IL, 10-29-1908
