EATON, Richard S., "Rick", Sr., Richard Selden Eaton Sr., 62, of Guilford, former 12th District state senator and communication executive, died on Tuesday, (October 4, 2005) at Hospice in Branford. He valiantly battled Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) for over 11 months. Born in Northford, the son of the late Frederik Selden and Mary Beckwith Bean Eaton, he was raised in Wallingford. He and his family also lived in New Haven, Old Lyme and, for more than 31 years, Guilford. In addition to his loved wife of 40 years, Sharon Noble Eaton, he leaves two sisters, Ariana van der Heyden Eaton of Old Lyme and Elizabeth Randolph Eaton-Irwin of Arlington, MA; 21 nieces and nephews; and 19 grand-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Military Intelligence Special Agent Richard S. Eaton Jr.; and half-brothers, Jonathan Thomas (Hart) Eaton and Peter Francisco (Hart) Eaton. A vigorous campaigner, he won his State Senate seat against a three-term incumbent by visiting more than 10,000 homes in the district: Guilford, Branford, North Branford, Wallingford, Durham and Middlefield. He was elected assistant majority leader and Senate chairman of both the Banks, and Program Review & Investigations Committees, and served on the Finance Committee and its Bonding Subcommittee. He was the principal sponsor of pioneering legislation in consumer banking, orphan bridge and state highway funding, elimination of tolls, excellence in education, tax reduction and, farmland preservation. He was considered a leading advocate of women's rights and was successful in convincing the Reagan administration's Department of Justice to use federal anti-racketeering (RICO) laws to protect women's health clinics. A former employee of the New Haven Journal-Courier, the New Haven Register and the Hartford Courant, Rick was also a Connecticut correspondent for the UPI International and the New York's Daily News. His investigative news stories were frequently picked up for national publication. After his career as a journalist Rick held marketing, advertising and public relations positions prior to becoming president of the Pace Corporation. During his 20 years with Pace, Rick and his colleagues won dozens of state and national marketing, advertising and public relations awards. He was a recognized authority in strategic marketing for banking, real estate and professional service organizations, as well as in management of government affairs issues. His campaign management and creative work contributed to the election victories of such State political figures as the late U.S. Rep. Stewart McKinney, R-4; and Larry DeNardis, R-3; Bridgeport Mayors Nicholas Panuzio and Leonard Paoletta; Hamden Mayor Lucien DiMeo; Wallingford Councilman Robert Parisi, and many other successful candidates for state and local office. Prior to his death, he was director of public affairs for the University of New Haven, his cherished alma mater, where he studied journalism. As a young man Rick worked as a summer employee of the late U.S. Senators Prescott Bush, R-CT, (grandfather and father of Presidents) and Russell Long, D-LA, and the late U.S. Sen. Thomas J. Dodd, father of U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd. His work and volunteer activities in Washington brought an invitation from President Lyndon B. Johnson to serve as youth director at the White House.
