Gustave Baumhoefer was the son of Westphalian immigrant Frederick Wilhelm "Fritz" Baumhoefer (1836-1924) and Louisa (Werner) Baumhoefer. His mother died early and in 1880 Gustav's father married Caroline (Fedewald) Horstmann who brought several children to the marriage.

At the time of his death, Gustave was retired from Missouri Pacific Railway, where he had worked as a "train auditor." He had moved from the Washington, Missouri area to St. Louis sometime between 1880 and 1900, where he worked as a switchman.

He never married. When he died, his residence was listed as Terminal Hotel, Little Rock, Arkansas. He was a Scottish Rite Mason--the informant on his death certificate was listed as "Masonic Records."

William Wilke, the writer of the family history in photos, was the executor of Gustav's estate.
