At the time of his death, Gustave was retired from Missouri Pacific Railway, where he had worked as a "train auditor." He had moved from the Washington, Missouri area to St. Louis sometime between 1880 and 1900, where he worked as a switchman.
He never married. When he died, his residence was listed as Terminal Hotel, Little Rock, Arkansas. He was a Scottish Rite Mason--the informant on his death certificate was listed as "Masonic Records."
William Wilke, the writer of the family history in photos, was the executor of Gustav's estate.
