Garnet C. Barnes, 83, passed away Sept. 16, 2008, in Fort Mill, S.C. Before that time, he had been a resident of Norfolk. Born Sept. 24, 1924, in Falls Creek, W.Va., he was the son of the late Bert and Lizzie Mitchell Barnes. He retired from the U.S. Navy as chief petty officer after serving 26 years. He served in active duty in the South Pacific during World War II and the Vietnam War. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Violet Reed Barnes and his second wife, Henrietta Linkous Fraley Barnes; brothers, Frank, Clyde, James Gene, Edward and Douglas; and sisters, Gaynell Turner and Clara Ward. Survivors include his wife, Jean Barnes of Fort Mill; daughter, Connie Barnes Cannon and her husband Richard of Virginia Beach; stepdaughter, Linda Rutherford of Tega Cay, S.C.; grandson, Richard W. Cannon Jr. and his wife Donna; granddaughter, Amber Cannon Mathis and her husband Chad; great-grandsons, Noah Cannon and Brandon Mathis, all of Virginia Beach; and sisters, Gladys Lyons and Dolores McDonald. Services were held Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, in Bluefield, W.Va.
