When she was seventeen years old, she became pregnant, and as was fairly common at the turn of the century, her mother faked a pregnancy and Kay's son was raised as one of her mother's children.
Child:
• Guy Stanley 'Stan' (1910-1974)
Kay never revealed the paternity of Stan. Most relatives believe the father was George William Ungewitter who was born in Sebastopol, California on October 3, 1891 and died in Sebastopol, California on September 18, 1954. He was the son of Mary Emma Donner (May 1863-1922) and William Preston Ungewitter (1859-1899). The Donner's are famous in California history for the reported cannibalism during the winter of 1846-1847 while trapped at Donner Lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains during their journey to California. Reportedly Kay's father, George Edwin Hillard, refused to let her marry a Ungewitter due to their shaded history.
Kay never married and often said in jest that she was "Looking for a rich husband".
Kay suffered a stroke while visiting friends in Ross, California and died shortly thereafter, on her birthday, at Palm Drive Hospital in Sebastopol, California. She was cremated and her ashes rest at the foot of her parents headstone.
