Byron Smith "Smitty" Cruit, Sr., 80, of Dalton City, died 4:30 p.m. Monday (September 15, 2008) in the Sullivan Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Smitty was born November 9, 1927, in Dalton City, the son of Earle Harold and Genevieve Smith Cruit.

He had been a farmer, a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Bethany, a 57 year member of the Bethany Masonic Lodge #884, AF & AM where he had served as Worshipful Master in 1957 and 1984 as well as serving as secretary and treasurer for several years, a member of the George A. Sentel Masonic Lodge # 764, AF & AM, Sullivan, was a Moultrie County Republican Central Committeeman and received the 2001 Volunteer of the Year Award, a Dora Township Volunteer Fireman, was an original member of the Ansar Shrine Cushman Scooter Patrol, a permanent contributing member of the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children as certified by Ansar Temple of Springfield, and was an avid bowler for the Moweaqua Bowling Team and won first place in 1986-1987.

He married Jean Parris on July 2, 1949 in Decatur.

Surviving are his wife Jean of Dalton City; children, Byron Smith Cruit, Jr. (Susan) of Augusta, GA, Calvin Deon Cruit (Peggy) of Sullivan, Gay Lee Thomas (Jack) of Dalton City; sister, Gwen Wilson (Dean) of Decatur; grandchildren, Stanley Allen Cruit of Augusta, GA, Shelly Christine Cruit of Graniteville, SC, Tyler Deon Cruit of Great Falls, MT, Leah Nicole Cruit of Sullivan, Byron Lee Thomas of Dalton City, Dustin Lee Thomas of Lovington, Eric Lee Thomas of Dalton City; great grandchildren, Gabrielle Diane Van Scyoc, Devn-Caleb Thomas and Ryan William Hutson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
