SILVERTON Bruce Thayer, 63, died Thursday of cancer.

He was born in Seattle. He was a graduate of California State University at Sacramento, where he earned a bachelor degree in police science and public administration.

He was a graduate of the FBI National Police Academy and retired in 1978 as deputy chief of the Sacramento Police Department. He worked as a private investigator for the past nine years with the criminal defense justice system in Salem.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; son, Martin of Naperville, Ill.; daughter Suzanne Luiken of England; brothers, Wesley of Cheshire and Brian of Manhattan, Nev., sister,Corinne Petty of Sacramento; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Silverton First BaptistChurch. Arrangements are by Unger Funeral Chapel.
