James Melvin "Jim" Henderson, age 80, of Iberia, passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2008, at the Springfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Crocker on February 26, 1928, son of Crayton and Helen Henderson. On September 23, 1947, in Waynesville, he was married to Shirley Charlene Smith, who preceded him in death on July 12, 1996.

He and his wife owned an auto repair shop and throughout Jim's life, cars were always a part of his life. He accepted a teaching position at the Waynesville Vocational Technical School and taught auto mechanics for 12 years before retiring. Jim was a wonderful teacher and mentor to his vocational high school students and many other students throughout his life. Upon retiring from teaching, Jim worked as a salesman at Hauck Chevrolet in St. Robert where he had a reputation for fairness and honesty. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Crocker and served as a member of the Missouri National Guard in Jefferson City.

Survivors include two daughters, Cindy Henderson Snead of Springfield, and Kathy Williams and husband Randy of Iberia; one son, Daniel Guy Henderson of the State of Mississippi; one brother, George Douglas Henderson of Crocker; three granddaughters, Trisha Luttrell and husband Kevin of Iberia, Melissa Edwards and husband Simon of Iberia, and Jamie Henderson of Richland; two grandsons, Aaron Snead of Springfield, and Andrew Henderson and wife Tracey of Eldridge; eight great-grandchildren, Cailin, Grace, and Chloe Edwards, Madison and Morgan Luttrell, Sydney Snead, and Katie and Haley Henderson. Also surviving are special family members, Dick and Mae Henderson of Bolivar; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie and Bob Cadwell of Sarcoxie, and Carol and Don Mihalevich of Springfield, and many other friends in the Crocker and Iberia areas.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and a son, James Patrick Henderson all of Crocker.

Visitation will be from 2-3 p.m. on Friday, September 19, at Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Services will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Doug Jacobson officiating. Interment will be in Crocker Cemetery.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to Oxford Healthcare and Hospice, 3660 South National Avenue, Springfield, MO or to the Crocker Senior Center.
