Son of James A. Sr. and Marguerite (Parker) Tidd. They moved to Middletown Springs and then moved to Bellows Falls when Jim started eighth grade.
James graduated from Bellows Falls Union High School in 1940. While in high school, and even after, he was an avid baseball player. He enjoyed watching his sons and grandchildren play the game later in his life.
James served in the United States Navy, two terms serving on the (Leaky Lee, as he called it) Cotton and USS Turner. He served in World War II and the Korean War.
James was married in 1947 to Margaret (Clapper) Tidd, divorced and remarried in 1966 to Margery (Howland) Tidd. They were married for 36 years before his wife died in February 2002.
He worked for Green Mountain Power Corporation for 38 years. James was a lineman for close to 30 years, then moved into the office. He retired in 1983.
His passions in life were climbing and cutting down trees, cutting wood, going to camp, and his garden. He loved flowers and if you ever visited his home, you always received a garden tour.
James was a 60-year member of the American Legion Post 37, and former commander. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus and the VFW. James loved playing cribbage and has many trophies playing for the Bellows Falls Cribbage Club.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Harold and Richard Tidd.
James leaves behind an extensive family; four brothers, Edward Tidd of Charlestown, Robert Tidd of Nokomis, Fla., Mike Tidd of Albany, N.Y., and Joel Tidd of Hancock, Vt.; two sisters, Beatrice Bartlett of Bellows Falls, and Rosemary DeLuco of Burlington, Mass.; his seven children, Ellen Jones, Michael Tidd, Nancy Swain, Sharon Singleton, Joanne Davis Condasta and husband, Paul, Butch Davis and Kevin Tidd and wife, Tina.; nine grandchildren, Ross Martin, Ian and Danielle Singleton, Beth Chilcolte, Lauren, Colby, and Rachel Tidd, Brittany Davis, and Dylan Condasta; and four great-grandchildren, Spencer, Kassidy, and Karly Martin, and Sydney Rain Reid.
