Charles J. Griffin, 100, died Sept. 22, 2008, at the Pines at Edgewood.

He was born Nov. 29, 1907, in Portsmouth, to Michael J. and Agnes B. Griffin. He attended St Patrick School, graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1926 and Suffolk Law School in 1932.

He practiced law for more than 60 years, during which time he served as Portsmouth City Solicitor, a special justice of Portsmouth District Court, a member of Portsmouth Board of Adjustment and a member of Portsmouth School Board.

He was the last living original corporator of New Hampshire Catholic Charities and served as a trustee and honorary vice president.

He was an honorary member of Portsmouth Council 140, Knights of Columbus, which bestowed upon him its highest award, the Granite Award in 2005. He was past President of Division 2, Ancient order of Hibernians; an original founder of St. James Catholic Parish; a co-founder of Portsmouth Catholic Laymen's Retreat Guild; a charter member of Portsmouth Lions Club, which bestowed on him its Lion of the Year Award in 2003; a member and fellow of New Hampshire Bar Foundation; a corporator and trustee of Piscataqua Savings Bank; and a member of Order of St. Gregory the Great, an honor conferred upon him by Pope Paul VI in 1970.

He was state chairman for Democratic candidate, Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, in 1952 and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1952 and 1956.

He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Agnes (Connell) Griffin, in 1994.

Family members include a son, Charles A. Griffin of Portsmouth; three grandsons; two great-grandsons; a sister, Sister Virginia A. Griffin; a brother, the Rev. Michael J. Griffin, and several nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Visiting hours are Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. James Church, 2075 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the church on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
