He was born Feb. 12, 1925, in Galesburg, the son of Jesse Joe and Olive Sharp Underwood.
He married Linda M. Adams on June 29, 1947, in Galesburg. She survives of Galesburg.
Also surviving are daughter Linda Rae (Sam) Taylor of New Port Richey, Fla.; sons Thomas R. Jr. (Karen) Underwood of Galesburg, Norman J. (Susie) Underwood of Galesburg, Donald D. (Kathy) Underwood of Rio and Roger W. (Debbie) Underwood of Galesburg; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandchildren, two brothers and one sister.
He was reared and educated in Galesburg.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific on the USS Recruit. He served from Sept. 7, 1943, until May 16, 1946, and received the American Area Campaign Medal, Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal with two stars.
He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad as a fireman for 23 years and then worked for Gale Products for 20 years, retiring in 1982.
He was of Methodist faith.
He was a life member of VFW Post 2257 of Galesburg and Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 of Galesburg.
Cremation rites will be accorded. Memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville, with Mike Lummis officiating. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at the funeral home in Knoxville. Private family inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg, with military services conducted by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 of Galesburg.
