He married Theodocia Frady and they became the parents of six children: Nelson Clyde, Florence Edith, Nellie May, David Frederick (buried in Old Mother Cemetery in Robbinsville #17274182), Violet Bernice, and Minnie Louise (who lived only a few weeks). He was a gentle, kind, softspoken man who loved plants and flowers of all kinds, often bringing cuttings and bulbs home from miles away, carrying them on his back or in his arms.
Bob worked at many jobs: farming, blacksmithing, carpentry, park warden, and property caretaker. In the late 1930's, he moved his family to what is now the historic Hall Cabin at Bone Valley, above Proctor, NC, now part of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. A summer home of the Kress (chain store) Family was nearby and he and Docia took care of their property and did miscellaneous jobs for the family.
Bob and Docia moved to Fontana when the National Park System forced the area residents out. He worked as an orderly in the small Fontana Dam Hospital and as the custodian at Fontana School while the dam was under construction. He and Docia next moved to Black Bottom in Robbinsville. In a few years, he and their son Fred bought a small farm in the Pinhook section of the Sweetwater Community. One fine May day Bob was plowing with his neighbor Arthur Rogers when he suffered a massive heart attack and immediately died. After a wake at his home, his body was taken to Sawmill Hill where his graveside funeral service was held. The accompanying photo was taken at that service.
Bob Slagle was raised in the Methodist Church at Maple Springs in Swain County, but later attended Baptist Churches. He was a devout Christian, conservative and dedicated to the Lord.
