Robert James Burkhart was born to Arthur James Burkhart, (1869-1927), and Martha Rueanna (King) Burkhart, (1870-1939), on the family's donation land claim near Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon, on March 15, 1900. He was one of five children borne of their union, his siblings being Edith L., b.1898, Alice M., b. Sept 1901, Martha, b.1904, Adelia Lillie b.1907, and Marvin, b.1911. His father had inherited his grandfather's original donation land claim and had married and raised his own family upon it. Robert's older sister, Edith, died in 1914 from a ruptured appendix. She was buried at the cemetery in Lebanon, a sad and early lesson in the harshness of life. Robert attended school full time and studied agriculture, helping his father on the family farm. He married Ruth Marshall, a fellow Oregonian, and they were blessed with two sons, Robert Marshall, b. 1923, and William Arthur, b.1925. The following year Robert's beloved father died at the age of 58 from a heart attack. Robert took over working of the farm and his mother continued to live on the farm until her demise from pancreatic cancer that had spread to her liver. She had suffered through cancer surgery at the Albany General Hospital but the cancer had spread thruout her body and nothing could really be done; she passed away the day after the cancer surgery on June 4th, 1939. She was buried with her beloved husband at the cemetery in Lebanon. May they both Rest at Peace forever. Robert James continued to farm the land that had been in his family for so many years, applying what he had learned in college and also what had always worked when it came to farming. Sadly, the heart problems that had taken his father's life at the age of 58 years would take his life when he was just 55 years of age. He was rushed to Lebanon Community Hospital on Oct 10th, 1955, but lived only an hour before passing away from heart failure. He was interred at the Santiam Central Cemetery as his dear wife and children wept. Ruth never remarried, remaining a widow to the end of her days and being buried next to her loving husband when she passed away in April, 1972. May they both Rest, at Peace, in Paradise, forever.
