On June 14th, the 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Company C, along with the 110th Ohio had been assigned to Flint Ridge, northwest of Winchester, supporting a battery of artillery. While there, they were hit by a Confederate division (upwards of 16,000 men) and 24 cannon. It was during this attack, as Union Captain Frederick H. Arckenoe of Company C was firing his pistol at the enemy, that he was shot in the head and killed.
“He was as brave, noble and gallant an officer as the 116th Ohio ever had.” He was born ‘Franciscus Friedrich Hermann Arckenoe’ on February 11, 1837, in Sankt Martin Kathoilisch, Greven, Westfalen, Prussia. He was buried at the Winchester National Cemetery, Winchester City, Virginia. Captain Frederick Hermann Arckenoe was 26 years old.
