MANCHESTER -- Joseph M. Griffin, 89, died Sept. 22, 2008, in Sharon, Conn., after a recent period of declining health.

He was born Jan. 25, 1919, in Manchester, a son of Patrick and Mary (O'Hara) Griffin. He was a lifelong resident of the city

He was a career firefighter with the City of Manchester, starting as a call fireman and working his way up to the rank of deputy chief before retiring after more than 30 years of service.

He was secretary of NH State Firemen's Association, well beyond retirement until 2001.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was pre-deceased by his wife, Theresa (Cote) Griffin in 2004.

IN HIS LIFE: Family includes a daughter, June, and son-in-law Rick Kubarek of Falls Village, Conn.; a son, Richard Griffin and his wife, Noureen, of Manchester; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Ball and Charlotte Richardson, both of Manchester; and many nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Cate & Johnson Funeral Home, 573 Pine St., corner of Harrison Street, Manchester. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, Manchester. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.
