Enlisted in Aug 1862 in Co. G, 73rd Illinois Infantry, serving under Generals Sherman and Thomas and engaging in the battles of Perryville, Chicamauga, Missionary Ridge, Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta, and Nashville, several times narrowly escaping death. A Republican who served his party and community as a constable for one term. He was a farmer.

Van Nattan, N. A., died at midnight Saturday, April 7, 1917, at Springfield hospital, at the age of 74 years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Clara A. VanNattan; two daughters, Mrs. Maggie Dunlap and Mrs. Mary Gregory, and one son, J. A. VanNattan.
