Part of the information in Walter's bio is from Cliff Kelley, the great-grandson of Walter's parents.

Walter Isaac Davenport was born on 27 Apr 1922 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He was the second son of Robert Marshall Davenport and Mary Jane Ida Arvilla Swann Kennedy Davenport. His older brother was Henry Rufus Davenport and his youngest brother was Williams Youree Davenport.

Walter also had two half sisters and a half brother from his mother's first marriage to William Kennedy:
- Mary C Kennedy Lack
- Sarah Lily Melvinnie Kennedy Goforth
- George Jackson Kennedy

Walter grew up in Rutherford County, Tennessee. He met and fell in love with Maggie McCoy. Not too long afterwards, his son, James Henry Davenport, was born.

In Jun 1944, Walter enlisted in the Army and was sent to Germany. He was a PFC of Company A, 104th Division in WWII.

In 1945, Walter's brother, William Youree Davenport, was in the war and was wounded in Germany on Friday, 13 Apr 1945. While William was recovering in the 108th General Hospital in Paris, France, he met a soldier named William F. Louis who was in the same outfit as his brother Walter. William asked Mr. Louis if he knew his brother Walter. Mr. Louis told William that he he knew Walter and that he had been killed by machine gun fire.

At the funeral home, Walter's wife Maggie wanted to open the casket, however, military personnel told her that they could not open it while they were there. Once they left, Maggie had the casket opened. There was no body inside. Obviously the body was never returned home and stayed in Germany. According to Polly Davenport (William's wife), Walter's mother could not accept his death because she never saw the body.
