Eld. A. R. Stephenson, familiarly known as "Uncle Andy" died at his home in Marshall, February 14 at 11:30 a.m.
He had been confined to his room for several months, and finally became paralyzed and helpless, and notwithstanding the very best physicians of the county were consulted, their efforts seemed to avail nothing.
In the presence of one of the largest congregations ever assembled in Marshall, most impressive funeral services were held at the Baptist Church, Wednesday, February 15th, conducted by elders Wade of Leslie and Pennington of Dongola. It is estimaed that at least 500 people assembled to do him honor.
Rev. Stephenson was born in Illinois in 1832. He afterward lived in Tennessee. Just before the Civil War (he) came to Hempstead County, Arkansas, later to Searcy County. He has spent the greater part of his live in Searcy and Stone Counties at Marshall and Timbo. He has been at Marshall about 28 years and has occupied the pulpit in the Baptist Church there, which he built, for a number of years.
He was the father of 11 children, 3 of whom are dead and 8 living. He has 57 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. His living children are: Mrs. Mahala Branscum, Alco; George Stephenson, Campbell; Wilse and William, Marshall; Mrs. Josie Rogers, Oklahoma; Mrs. Lockey Branscum, Leslie; and Mrs. Frances Horn, Marshall.
