Karen Herring Ackerman, 57, of Des Moines, formerly of Allison, died Thursday, Sept. 25, at Mercy Hospice House, Johnston.

She was born June 3, 1951, in Dexter, daughter of Gayelord and Norma Herring. She married Mark Ackerman on Aug. 30, 1980.

She graduated from Dexfield High of Redfield in 1969 and attended college in Omaha, Neb. She was employed with the University of Iowa's Employment Policy Group.

She also was the past chair for the Governor's Advisory Council for the Iowa Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and was a member of Trinity Reformed Church of Allison.

Survived by: her husband; two sons, Benjamin of Minneapolis and Nathan (fiancee Cara Atzini) of Des Moines; a grandson; her mother, Norma Herring of Adel; a brother, Ken Herring of Adel; and two sisters, Peggy Hutchins of Linden and Sue Kohlander of Slater.

Preceded in death by: her father.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Reformed Church, Allison, with burial in the Allison Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Allison.
