Arthur Newcomer BRYAN Longtime Bryan attorney

Arthur Sands Newcomer, 87, Bryan, died Tuesday in Harborside Healthcare Center, Bryan.

He was born Dec. 6, 1917, in Bryan, the son of Claire and Chauncey Newcomer. In 1946, he married Eleanor Cupler, who survives.

A graduate of Hillsdale College and Ohio Northern University School of Law, he was a World War II veteran serving in the South Pacific Theater aboard the DD 530 USS Trathen. He practiced law for 55 years with the Bryan firm of Newcomer Shaffer, Spangler and Breininger, and served on the Ohio Bar Association executive committee during which time he rewrote the law of eminent domain. He helped establish the Mohawk Shannon plant, traveling many times to Europe and Ireland, and served many years on the Bryan Public Library board.

Also surviving are a son, two daughters, and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church, Bryan, with Rev. Robert Marrow officiating. Burr Funeral Home and Crematory, Bryan, is handling arrangements.

Preferred memorials are to the Friends of the Bryan Public Library or to Hospice Care of the Community Hospitals and Wellness Center.
