Emma Rettie Johnson Snow, 92, of Frostproof, died Thursday September 9, 2004 of complications of a stroke at the Lake Wales Extended Care Facility.
Born on May 10, 1912 in Dale County, Alabama, she was the daughter of Robert Irvin Johnson and Martha Jeanette (Stevens) Johnson.
She was one of nine children. Her father, Irvin Johnson was a music teacher and educator. Being a widower with four children, he married Jeanette (Stevens) Johnson and they together had five more children; Emma being the oldest. At age 39 Irvin Johnson died of walking pneumonia when Emma was only 10 years old. He left four children from his first marriage; a daughter, a set of twin boys and another twin daughter (her twin sister being deceased with the Mother at birth), Emma, Beatrice, C.R., Zera Belle and one not yet born son Irvin (Jr.) Johnson.
She moved to Frostproof from Alabama in 1933.
She married Hiram Vester Snow in 1935. Two children were born of this marriage in 1937. The marriage lasted for 43 years until Mr. Snow's death in 1978.
Mrs. Snow was a homemaker and Civic leader. While her two children (twins) Larry and Jeanette were in school, Emma Snow was president and a very active member of the Frostproof PTA, and as an accomplished musician, she organized benefit talent shows for the schools; charter member and president of the Band Booster's Club; officer of the Frostproof Woman's Club, a member of the First Baptist Church; Sunday School Teacher; and pianist at the Frist Baptist Church in Frostproof. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed sewing. She led an active lifestyle until the age of 91. She was out actually raking leaves under her oak tree when she had a stroke.
Mrs. Snow was preceded in death by her parents Irvin and Jeanette Johnson; husband Vester Snow; brother C.R. Johnson, Sister Beatrice Eldridge, Twin half brothers Clinton and Clarence Johnson, half sisters Maye Shawe (twin - Other twin not named deceased at birth) sister, Thelma Bass; and Grandson Clay Adams.
She is survived by her children, twins Jeanette Wells of Lakeland and Larry Snow of Merritt Island, the spouses Harold Wells and Donna Snow.
Grandchildren: Rocky White and Melony Gaffney of Frostproof, Macara Parker of Lakeland, Lisa Woodard and Todd Snow of Merritt Island and ten great grandchildren, sister Zera Belle Brown Allen and Irvin Johnson, Jr. of Frostproof
Funeral Services were held Saturday, September 11, 2004 at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home of Frostproof with Rev. Darrol Hood officiating. Interment followed at Silver Hill Cemetery in Frostproof.
