Dewitt was the son of Daniel Jones and Susanna Persons. He served in 25th Illinois Regiment, Company B, joining the Union Army 1 June 1861. He participated in the Battle of Pea Ridge, Stone River, Mission Ridge and battles before Atlanta, serving under Capt. Thomas McKibben. He was discharged 30 June 1864.
