JOHN D. BARNES, died on December 15, 2004 at his home. John D. Barnes was born November 16, 1912, in Ripley, Lauderdale County, Tennessee. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. T.I. Barnes . Both of his parents were teachers, and his father was twice elected to the State Legislature - House of Representatives. In 1931, Mr. Barnes graduated from Ripley High School where he participated in football, basketball, and track. He graduated from Southwestern at Memphis in 1935 with a BA degree with majors in English and mathematics. His accomplishments and honors at Southwestern were: Elected to Hall of Fame, Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, President of Honor Council, Elected to Omicron Delta Kappa and Sigma Upsilon, honorary fraternities, participated in varsity football, track and basketball. A Master of Education Degree was received by Mr. Barnes in 1951 from the University of Mississippi. He was elected to Phi Delta Kappa honorary fraternity in the College of Education at the University of Mississippi. During World War II, Mr. Barnes served in the Army Air Corps for twenty-six months. Mr. Barnes' involvement in education began as a teacher at Whitehaven and Collierville Schools in the Shelby County System. Mr. Barnes' brother, Dr. George H. Barnes, former Superintendent of Shelby County Schools, passed away on March 10, 1983. His wife, Hazel Ward Barnes, was Mr. Barnes' secretary throughout his career as principal. He and Hazel had two sons, John Ward Barnes and George Neil Barnes, both of whom served in Vietnam in the Marine Corps. John Ward was killed in an airplane accident and George Neil passed away in August 2003. He is survived by his wife Hazel Ward Barnes, grandsons Lawton Barnes, Brook Barnes, and George Barnes. Mr. Barnes was a member of Mullins Methodist Church. Funeral Services will be at 3:00, Friday at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel with burial in Memorial Park. Arrangements by Memphis Funeral Home.
