You are welcome to use this as a bio if you like: "George McKinley Stephenson was born March 27, 1897 in Bells, Tenn., according to his World War I draft registration, application for a military headstone and the Social Security Death Index. Records often list him as "McKinley," though the family referred to him as "Ken," according to a nephew, William Roy Stephenson. Bells is in Crockett County where the 1900 Census shows McKinley living with his parents and several siblings as his father worked as a farmer. The 1910 Census shows George Adams Stephenson continuing as a Crockett County farmer. McKinley, 13, worked as a laborer and lived in the large household with his parents and several siblings. After the elder George died in 1918, McKinley registered a few months later for the World War I draft. He listed his residence as Bells and his mother "Sallie" as his nearest relative. McKinley served from June 6, 1918 to March 5, 1919 as a Private First Class in the Army, according to an application for a military headstone. After his service, the 1920 Census shows McKinley had relocated to Pelahatchie, a community in Rankin County, Miss., where he was a farm laborer and living as a boarder in the household of farmer W.B. Boling. About 1921, McKinley married Mississippi native Lillie Leona Abernathy, apparently in Pelahatchie, though I have not found a marriage record. By 1930, they continued living in Rankin County with three children: Neil, 7; Nelson, 4; and Hallie Mae, 1. McKinley worked as a farmer. The 1940 Census lists "Kent" Stephenson as a laborer in a Rankin County Stave Mill. He and "Lilly" had four children in the household: "Neal," 18; Nelson, 14; Hattie, 8; and Lucile, 7. It appears Hallie Mae and Hattie are the same child. Lillie (Abernathy) Stephenson died Nov. 14, 1940, according to her obituary, published Nov. 21, 1940 in a Brandon, Miss., newspaper, which reported she was well-known and deeply mourned in the community. She is buried at Holy Bush Methodist Church cemetery, according to the obituary, which reported she was survived by her husband, a daughter and two sons, so either Hattie or Lucile apparently died that same year. McKinley remarried at some point to Tennessee native Sarah Adala (Humphreys) Wilkinson. She previously had been married to Edgar Allen Wilkinson, who died in 1949 and is buried in Marshall County, Miss., according to findagrave.com. McKinley was a resident of Potts Camp, Miss., just south of Memphis, Tenn., when he died March 27, 1962 of a cerebral hemorrhage at a VA hospital in Memphis, according to his death certificate and the Social Security Death Index. He is buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis, according to the death certificate and application for a military headstone. According to the Social Security Death Index, Sarah (Humphreys) Stephenson died April 13, 2000 in Potts Camp, which is in Marshall County. She is buried at Temperance Hill Cemetery in Marshall County, according to findagrave.com." -- Submitted by Mike Stephenson, a first cousin three times removed of McKinley Stephenson
