He was a lifelong resident of Warren County and had lived in Williamsport most of his life. He was a 1932 graduate of Williamsport High School. He was married in 1938 to Maxine Ruth DeMotte, who died in 1960. He was married August 16, 1962, to L. Jean Abel, in Williamsport, who survives.
He was an independent insurance agent, owned an operated the DeMotte Agency in Williamsport from 1943 until retiring in 1985. He also was a professional baseball player from 1934 until 1938. He joined the minor baseball league in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, in 1934, played two seasons there, then went to Wausau, Wisconsin, where h played two seasons for the Lumberjacks. His contract was purchased in the spring of 1937 by the Brooklyn Dodgers and he played in the Triple 1 League in Clinton, Iowa.
He was a member of Williamsport United Methodist Church; Pine Village Masonic Lodge; Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis; Indianapolis Shrine Club; Lafayette Elks Club; and several local and civic groups.
Surviving, besides his wife, are three daughter, Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Murphy, Genesso, Illinois, Mrs. Donald (Beverlie) VanLeer, Indianapolis, and Mrs. Betty C. Eaton, Las Vegas, Nevada; two sons, Robert Abel, Carmel, and Donald Abel, Rensselaer; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Fisher Funeral Home Chapel, Williamsport, with the Rev. Charles Anderson, the Rev. Don Williams and Don Glover officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Williamsport. Those so desiring may contribute in memoriam to Community Hospital, Williamsport." – Star Tribune, September 25, 1987
