His father, Frederick W. Hose was born in Germany. His mother, Emma (Hoover) Hose was born in Iowa. In 1900 they moved and homesteaded near Marlin, Grant County, WA. They tried Canada for a few years and then bought a farm at Wilson Creek, Grant County, WA.

When just a child Al lost the sight of one of his eyes. He worked in construction and operated heavy machinery. His occupation was listed as a machinist.

He married Verna L. Fox on 9 September 1919 Spokane, Spokane County, Washington. She was born about 1903 in Washington. Her father, A. H. Fox was born in Illinois and her mother was Jennie (Pearl) Fox.

He retired from work when he had major lung surgery in 1961.

He had one child:
Leon Fox who died at the age of 18 while in the U. S. Navy.
