She was the daughter of Isaac Cresswell and Elzy (Elsie) Foose. She was married on 31 March 1925 to Franklin Lewis Thoma and they had 5 children. James Benjamin, Franklin Lewis, Ralph Leland, Florann Marilyn and Joyce Maureen. The three boys are deceased. When she became a widow in April 1954, she went to work in the nursing field and worked two full time jobs to raise her children. All her friends knew her by her middle name "Marie". In 1987 she relocated to Phoenix, AZ with her daughter Joyce's family where she lived until she passed away.
