Marion Sentinel, [Thursday] February 8, 1923: LAST RITES HELD FOR MRS. F. M. HORN
Funeral services for the late Mrs. F. M. Horn were held yesterday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Methodist church, the services being in charge of her pastor Rev. Earle E. Baker. A large number were present to pay a last tribute of respect to her memory and the floral offerings attested the high esteem in which she was held. The interment was at Oak Shade Cemetery.
Sarah Jane Dilling, daughter of Henry and Cathrine Dilling, was born at Shellsburg in Benton county on June 27, 1851 and died at her home in Marion on the fifth of February, 1923 at the age of 71 years, 7 months and eight days. She lived at the place of her birth until the time of her marriage to F. M. Horn on December 22, 1870. She with her husband then came to Western, Iowa in Linn county, where they resided on a farm for about twelve years. They then moved to the present homestead about 8 miles southeast of Marion. Thirteen years ago they retired and came to Marion to live.
Mrs. Horn was converted in early childhood and united with the U. B. church and has given a long and useful life to Christian service. She joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Martin's Creek many years ago and transferred to Marion, where she was a member at the time of her death. She loved her church and its works. For some years she has been the faithful secretary of the Ladies Bible Class, caring for the details of this office with great efficiency.
She is survived by her husband, who is just rallying from a very severe attack of pneumonia, by a daughter, Mrs. J. E. Beach of Mt. Vernon, Iowa and a son Harry F., who lives on the home place southeast of Marion. There are also six grandchildren. One brother [Emory] remains who lives at Fargo, N. Dak.
We shall remember this good woman for her life of loving devotion in the home, for her faithful service to the community and the church and for her life that so beautifully exemplified the teachings of the Christ. There are many of those who remain to rise up and called her name blessed. Thus "she being dead yet speaketh".
