William Cleveland Howell was actually born on 23 June 1889. The date of 1890 on the tombstone is not correct. His wife Florence was embarrased that she was older than her husband so she had the tombstone done with the wrong birth year. Her birth year on her tombstone is also wrong. She made herself younger. William Cleveland Howell was the son of Moses Frederick Howell and Catharine Ader Clawson. William was the oldest of five children and only son. His sisters were Mary Jane, Grace Mae, Mable Florence and Ervilla Ethel. William and his sisters grew up in German Valley (now Long Valley), Morris County, New Jersey. He married Florence Estelle Baldwin (the daughter of James W. Baldwin and Jennie Magee). William worked for the Central railroad for 28 years and died on the job. William and Florence had the following children.

Alma Jenny Howell Boepple Mattox

William C. Howell, Sr.

William C. Howell, Sr., of North
Bridge avenue, a Central railroad
trainman for 28 years, suffered an
acute heart attack Tuesday night
while working at Point Pleasant and
died instantly. Mr. Howell was
throwing a switch several hundred
feet away from his train and was
discovered by members of the crew.

According to his wife, Mrs. Flor-
ence Howell, he had been ailing for
more than a week. Besides his wife,
Mr. HOwell leaves two daughters,
Alma and Corene, and a son, Wil-
liam, Jr., all living at home; his
father, Frederick HOwell of Long
Valley, and four sisters, Mrs. Grace
Byrd, Mrs. Mabel Van Pelt, Mrs.
Mary Frace of Califon and Mrs. Ed-
ward Fisler of Belford.

Mr. Howell was born at Long Val-
ley, the son of Frederick and Cath-
erine Howell. After his marriage
he moved to Matawan and later to
Keyport. Together with his family,
he moved to Red Bank in 1923. Mr.
Howell was 51 years old.

In addition to his other duties, he
had been treasurer of the Train-
men's brotherhood of the Central
railroad for 18 years and was also
an active member of Mystic Brother-
hood of Masons of Red Bank. He
was a member of the Red Bank
Baptist church.

The funeral will be held tomor-
row afternoon at his late home with
Rev. Charles A. Thunn of the Red
Bank Baptist church officiating.

Burial will be in Green Grove
cemetery, Keyport, under the direc-
tion of the Harvey S. Bedle Fun-
eral home. Masonic services will be
held at his late hoe this evening.

Byrd should be Burd
Catherine should be Catharine

In addition he had a daughter Teresa May "Tess" Tinsman Gannon FAG# 21420652 who was adopted and raised by another couple before his marriage to his wife. However, my grandfather and it appears his parents and some of his sisters kept up a relationship with Teresa at least until my grandfather died in 1941. After that I am unware of what happened.
