Jacob joined the Union forces during the Civil War, while living in Missouri. He was a Private in Company 'C', 12th Regiment of Calvary, under the command of Thomas B. Walker on January 26, 1862. During his duty he was honorably discharged because of an injury that occurred when he was thrown into the horn of his horse saddle.
