Funeral Planned for Julia Barlow
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the First Congregational Church for Julia L. Barlow, 92, a Bakersfield resident since 1900 and former owner of the building now known as the Guild House. She died Monday at her home.
The Rev. Edward G. Wulfekuehler will officiate and interment will follow in Union Cemetery.
Friends may call at Doughty-Calhoun-O'Meara Mortuary until 5 pm today.
A native of Great Village, Nova Scotia, Mrs. Barlow and her family came to this country while she was still a small child, settling in Santa Rosa.
In 1900 they moved to Bakersfield, and in 1906 Mrs. Barlow began three years of nursing training in San Francisco. She earned her nursing degree and for a number of years practiced nursing in Bakersfield.
Well-known for her philanthropic efforts, Mrs. Barlow spent much time writing letters and visiting the sick in their homes and in hospitals.
She was active in the First Congregational Church, which she had joined in 1902, and had been a continuous member of the Bakersfield Women's Club since 1914.
She also served on the Children's Shelter board 10 years, with the Camp Fire Girls of America, from 1938 to 1950, and was affiliated with the League of Women Voters and the Kern County Musical Association (originally the Bakersfield Music Club).
She lived in the home now known as the Guild House until 13 years ago, when she moved to the home of her daughter and son-in-law, H.E. "Woody" and Mamie Woodworth at 2800 2nd Street.
Mrs. Barlow was preceded in Death by her husband, Charles A. She is survived by her daughter and a sister, Mrs. Bessie White of Los Angeles.
Pallbearers will be Dwight L. Hulse, Robert Cumins, Richard White, Arthur Dahlberg, Raymond Plass and Harold Pomeroy.
Honorary bearers will be Dr. Joe Smith, Forrest Frick, Theron Taber, Hugh Jewett, Robert Boesch, Aslan Turoonjian, William Nash and Lawrence Weill.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
