William H. Ales was enlisted by Major Haller at Baltimore, Maryland, into Company B, Third Regiment of Infantry, United States Army, January 7, 1850. At his enlistment William stated that he was age 25 years and was born at Clarksville, Virginia, and his occupation was Tobacconist. He was described as being 5 feet 7½ inches, with Light complexion and with Blue eyes and Sandy hair. During his service he was promoted Sergeant and was mustered out at Albuquerque, New Mexico Territory, January 7, 1855.

William H. Ales enlisted in the United States Army from October 15, 1855, to 1861. During this enlistment he deserted March 15, 1860, (the date of his surrender or apprehension was not indicated in the period record), and he served as a Private. At his enlistment William stated that he was age 29 years and was born at Clarksville, Virginia, and his occupation was Soldier. He was described as being 5 feet 7½ inches, with Light complexion and with Blue eyes and Sandy hair. William possibly enlisted in Company D, Third Regiment of Infantry, and was mustered out from Company F, Tenth Regiment of Infantry, at Fort Craig, New Mexico Territory.

William H. Ales was transferred from a company which he supposed First Lieutenant John Lewis, Company G, First Regiment of Infantry, New Mexico Volunteers, was to command to Company A, First Battalion of Veteran Infantry, California Volunteers, at Fort Union, New Mexico Territory, November 18, 1864, per a letter of instructions to the Commanding Officer, Fort Union, dated Headquarters, Department of New Mexico, Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory, February 11, 1865, by Brigadier General James Henry Carleton. Recruit Ales mustered in at Fort Union January 3, 1865. At his November, 1864, enlistment William stated that he was born at Petersburg, Virginia, and he was 35 years old and by occupation he was a Soldier. His enlistment contract described him as being 5 feet 7½ inches, with Light complexion and with Gray eyes and Sandy hair, and the contract showed that the 1864 enlistment was the fourth enlistment for him. Private Ales was stationed at San Antonio, New Mexico Territory, February 28, 1865. Private Ales was promoted Sergeant April 2, 1865. Private Ales was transferred to Company B, same battalion, May 1, 1865. Sergeant Ales, who served as escort for a Government wagon from Fort Craig, was received at Fort McRae, New Mexico Territory, July 30, 1865. From December 11, 1865, to March, 1866, Sergeant Ales was absent from his company at the coal mines, New Mexico Territory. During March to August 8, 1866, Sergeant Ales was reported attached to Company H, First Regiment of Cavalry, California Volunteers, and on extra duty in the Quartermaster Department at Fort Craig. Sergeant Ales left Fort Craig August 8, 1866, to join his company. Sergeant Ales mustered out at Los Pinos, New Mexico Territory, September 15, 1866. William Ales, age 55 years, a Metallurgist and a Justice of the Peace, whose nativity was shown as Manchester, England, was enumerated August 16, 1880, at Hillsborough, Doña Ana County, New Mexico Territory, with Sophia Ales, 31, Alfred M. Ales, 4, Louisa Ales, 11 months, and his mother-in-law, Rosanna Hertzer, 48, born County Monaghan, Ireland.

Sophia Ales, widow of William, filed from New Mexico for a widow's pension September 19, 1890, and received application No. 475,307 and certificate No. 362,109. Mrs. Louisa Ales Carabajal, of Hillsboro, Sierra County, New Mexico, contacted the Federal government to request information about William H. Ales April 23, 1941.
