BETTY MAE LUTHER, 93, died June 5, 2001, at Providence Hospital after a short illness. Service was at Chapel by the Sea, 14730 Turnagain Bluff Way, with graveside services at Angelus Memorial Park, followed by a celebration of life.

Mrs. Luther was born Dec. 28, 1907, in Aurora, Iowa. She came to Alaska with her husband and young son in 1944. Mrs. Luther worked as a teacher in Iowa and was a bookkeeper for the Alaska Railroad until she retired to become a partner with her husband in Pioneer Realty. She was active in real estate affairs, church groups and other organizations. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, fishing and hunting, gardening and cooking. Her family said: ''Betty was a wonderful person and a truly awesome mother and grandmother. She was very family oriented, yet a very capable, independent woman when she needed to be. Shortly after arriving in Alaska, she became the first one in her family to harvest a moose. She especially enjoyed the company of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.'' Mrs. Luther was preceded in death by her husband, Howard C. Luther Sr.; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orville King; brother, Howard King; sisters, Alice Wells and Marie and Ruth King; grandsons, Greg and Ted Luther; and great-grandchildren, Jamie and Kate Lynn Luther.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Howard C. Luther Jr. of Big Lake; brother, Don King of Arkansas; grandchildren, Frederick Luther of New York; Cheryl Sheldon, James Luther and Kathryn Sathers of Anchorage, Stephen Luther of Wasilla and Robert Luther of California; great-grandchildren, Toby, Todd and Travis Luther of Oregon, Nicole and Christina Sheldon and Cory and Kaylee Sathers of Anchorage, Christopher and Daniel Luther of Wasilla, and Logan, Matthew and Megan Luther of New York; and great-great-grandchildren, Alexandria and Jacob Luther of Oregon. Arrangements were by Kehl's Memorial Chapel & Crematory.
