Over the years 1845 to 1868 they had ten children, six of whom lived to adulthood. They left Pennsylvania after the birth of daughter Nancy in 1852, were in Springfield, Illinois in 1855 when their son Charles was born, and were early pioneers in Clark County in Wisconsin before the birth of their third child, Emery, in 1858. The family farmed in the area of Alma Center where Lewis acquired 40 acres from the federal government in July 1859 and an additional 80 acres in March 1871. These lands were acquired under the 1862 Homestead Act and a predecessor law.
Lewis died in 1893 at age 69 and is buried at Houghtonburg Cemetery in Alma Center, where his wife Christenah preceded him following her death in 1889 at the age of 60.
