Born in Earlsheaton, England, he was the son of Matthew and Margaret(Colton)Briggs. He was a retired toolmaker for the T.R.Almond Co. of Ashburnham. He was Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 18, for 58 years, working with over 100 Eagle Scouts during that time. He was the unofficial life guard at Ashburnham's swimming pool. He received three Presidential Citations for lifesaving in three separate incidents.
He is survived by his wife, Etta, sons Channing M. of Portland, Oregon, Richard G. of Beverly, MA and John R. Jr of Cicero, NY; two daughters, Margaret C, wife of Raymond Klingenberg of Ashburnham, and Dora B., wife of Robert E. Nelson of Glens Falls, NY; 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A daughter, Beryl Bezanson died in 1973. Services were held from the John R. Briggs School in Ashburnham.
