Leslie Earl Beames, 72, Holton, died Wednesday, July 23, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Beames was born Nov. 29, 1924 in Belleville, the son of Lester and Bernice Colwell Beames.

He graduated from Belleville High School in 1942. He attended Kansas State University and the University of Kansas. He worked for J.C. Penney Company for 37 years. He worked at several Penney stores in Nebraska before moving to Holton in 1961 where he was the manager of the J.C. Penney for 23 years. He worked for the Holton Recorder in advertising for 11 years before retiring in 1996.

Mr. Beames was a member of the Mary L. Bair Post #44 of the American Legion in Holton. He was a member and past commander of the VFW Post #1367 and was the secretary and treasurer on the board of the Vets Club. He was secretary of the Holton Rotary Club and served on the Holton City Planning Board for many years. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge and served in the Hospital Corp for the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Phillippines. He was also on the Board of the Jackson County Literacy Council.

Mr. Beames was married to Geraldine Marty June 1, 1948 in Belvue, Neb. She Survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Ronald Beames, McKenzie, Tenn. and Robert Beames, Baltimore, Md.; ,three daughters, Lesley Sevdy, Peachtree, Ga., Penny Jordan, Nashville, Tenn., and Peggy Martin, Memphis, Tenn.; and 13 grandchildren.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 28, at Mercer Funeral Home, Holton. Burial was at the Holton Cemetery.
