Raymond Markunas, 76, of Tolland, husband of Gilmay (Dubois) Markunas, died on Tuesday (October 7, 2008) at St. Francis Hospital.


He was born February 28, 1932 in Kaunas, Lithuania the son of the late Kazys and Eleonora Morkunas. He graduated from Hartford State Technical College in 1972. Ray retired from the Metropolitan District Commission in 1990 after 32 years of service as an Assistant Manger of Utility Service Department. He was a U.S. Marine Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He co-founded the Tolland Soccer Club for boys and girls in 1971,and served as past vice president of the Connecticut Junior Soccer League Northeast Region. He served as past chairman on the Sewer Authority and Water Pollution Control Study Committee for the Town of Tolland.


Besides his wife, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Charles and Gilmay Markunas of Vernon, William and Angela Markunas of Big Spring, TX, Ray and Donna Markunas of Middlesex, NJ and Linda and John Curtis of Manchester; his stepchildren and their spouses, Paul and Denise LePage of Spartenburg, SC, Michael LePage of Inverness, FL, Pierre LePage of Newington, Gilmay Markunas of Vernon and Nicole Kearney of Tolland; two brothers, Vytautas Markunas of Lithuania and Lyman Morkunas of Phoenix, AZ; 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife of 27 years, Edwina (Bulgajewski) Markunas.


Friends may gather on Saturday, October 11 at St. Matthew's Church, Tolland for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.
Burial with Full Military Honors accorded will follow in South Cemetery, Tolland.
Relatives and Friends may call at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Merrow Road (Route 195) on Friday from 4-7 p.m..
