Bert Byron Kerns of King City died of a heart disease Monday at Eden Valley Care Center. He was 79.

Mr. Kerns was a native of Newhall. He lived in King City for more than 60 years. He was a 1933 graduate of King City High School. Mr. Kerns was owner and operator of Kerns Carpets and Drapes in King City for 45 years.

He was a member of Salinas Elks Club No. 614, Parks Commission, Monterey County
Grand Jury, Monterey County Agriculture and Life Museum, and Silver Kings and Queens.

He was a cabinet maker and enjoyed reading, cycling, dancing, traveling, skiing, rafting and backpacking.

Mr. Kerns is survived by his wife, Patricia Kerns of King City; his son, William Kerns of Reno, Nev.; his daughters, Karen Purdon and Kristen Cormie, both of Reno, Nev.; Mary Beth Kerns of King City; his sister Alice Rust of Redmond, Ore.; and six grandchildren; two great=grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Whitehurst-Grim Funeral Service. Burial will be in the King City Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to: MCARLM, P. O.
