Antonino, John Batista

John Batista Antonino, 85, of Bakersfield, CA, passed away October 7, 2008 after battling several medical complications in the later years of his life. John was born October 1, 1923, in Rolapp, Utah, the second child of Charles James and Mary Isabelle Antonino, immigrants of Italy. The family moved to Gardena, CA where John and his sister, Margaret were raised on the family poultry farm. He gained his work ethic from his father and performed many chores on the farm. As a young man, he worked in the Southern California ship building yards as a certified welder. John, like so many others, didn't know the risk of being exposed to asbestos, and in the later years of his life it began to take its toll, diminishing his lung capacity. He spent a short time in the Army, during WW II and received a medical discharge; Shortly after the war he met his lifetime love and wife of 61 years, Margaret Frank; They were married April 19, 1947. The welding skills allowed John to work for Bechtel Corp. as part of the crew created by Bechtel to fulfill a contract constructing piers in Kuwait's harbor. John went to Kuwait and expanded his construction experienced with Bechtel, later to be used in his own business. John and Margaret (Mickie) started Valley Steel Construction in Bakersfield shortly after he returned to the United States. John soon became respected in the business community and a generous booster to the Bakersfield community. He was awarded a Butler Steel Building independent franchise in 1953, and through the years has received numerous awards honoring his volume of business with Butler Manufacturing and still holds the distinction of being the largest volume purchaser of Butler Steel Products in the world. His work and business ethics were recognized by several business and community honors he has received throughout his career. The one that stands above the rest was being named Contractor of the Year by Kern County Contractors Association in 1992. John was proud of his Italian heritage and was an active member for several years of the Italian Heritage Dante Club of Bakersfield. He was recognized by the President of Italy and received the title of Cavaliere, an honor bestowed on outstanding Italian Americans. John was also recognized by the Italian Heritage Dante Association and awarded it's annual Columbian Award. John enjoyed the outdoors, mountains, lakes and fishing; He was an avid sports enthusiast and could discuss the current events of most professional sports, especially Los Angeles area teams. He loved the annual fishing trips to Crowley Lake and the Mammoth area. He also enjoyed family barbecues and was famous for his Italian seasoned chicken. John and Mickie raised three children. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Mickie); daughters, Kathy and husband, Basil Perch of Visalia, Barbara and husband, Ellis Daniels of Clovis; and son, Chuck Antonino of Bakersfield; 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two on the way. John was surrounded by his family and passed away as he lived, with dignity. Rosary will be at Greenlawn Cemetery at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, October 12th.
