George Mueth, a pioneer in the St. Louis area lumber business, died Saturday (Jan. 15, 1994) after suffering a heart attack at the Florissant Elks Lodge. He was 71.
Mr. Mueth, of Shrewsbury, founded Mueth Lumber & Plywood Co. in the early 1960s in Creve Coeur. About that same time he started the St. Louis Flameproof Co. on South Broadway. The company was the first in the area to pressure treat lumber. He sold that business in the late 1960s.
He later moved Mueth Lumber & Plywood to its current location at 1 Hawthorne Court, Glendale. Mr. Mueth retired from the business in 1985; his son, J. Tracy Mueth, of Glendale, operates the company.
Mr. Mueth, a native of St. Louis, served in the Army as a Corporal in the Air Force in World War II. Before the war, he worked for years in the lumber business and at area cabinet shops to put himself through school at Christian Brothers College high school here.
He was active for years in the International Fraternal Order of Lumbermen and served on its executive board for six years. Mr. Mueth also was the executive vice president for 15 years of the National Association of Lumber Salesmen.
Mr. Mueth was also active for years in the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church and, since 1984, at Cure of Ars Catholic Church in Shrewsbury.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 670 South Laclede Station Road, in Shrewsbury. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Kutis Funeral Home, 10151 Gravois Road, in Affton.
In addition to his son, other survivors include his wife, Marjorie Mueth; six daughters, Linda Hardick of London, Ontario, Canada, Julie Arnold of Mehlville, Mary McKee of Weableau, Mo., Marje Uelk of Ballwin, and Betsy Teller and Christina Wanner, both of Fenton; two other sons, Joseph Mueth and John Mueth, both of Columbia, Mo.; and 22 grandchildren.
