James Douglas Austin left this world on 7 Apr 1988 after a lengthy illness. As a young man, Doug served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War era as a Sonarman, advancing to the rating of Sonar Technician - Surface, Petty Officer Second Class. Part of his service took him to the Pacific Proving Grounds during Operation Redwing conducted at the Bikini and Eniwetok atolls in the South Pacific. Upon returning to civilian life Doug worked as an electrician at the Todd Shipyards in Galveston, Texas. He and his wife Evonne bought a home in Hitchcock, Texas where he lived till his final days.

At the time of his passing, James was survived by his three children; daughter, Debra Lynn Donahue (1959 - 2018) of San Leon, TX; daughter, Laura Ann Massey (1961 - ) of Texas City, TX; son, Richard Douglas Austin (1963 - ) of Port Isabel, TX; his mother, Eunice Pixley – Austin – Craft (1914 – 2002) of Galveston, TX and his brother, Gene Ray Austin (1934 – 1989) of Tomball, TX, along with several neices, nephews and grand-children.

He was preceeded in death by his son, James Robert Austin (1965-1965) and his father, Frank Lee Austin (1910 – 1970) of Houston, TX.
