He was in the Civil War as a soldier in the 10th Regiment of New York Volunteers. He was transferred to Company H as a sergeant, discharged on 7 May 1863 and returned to Leverett, Massachusetts. (He must have been wounded or in ill health, because he died in December at a young age.)
