The following story told by her brother, Kester Gilbert 'Dick', to his son, Preston: Verla was coming home (KY) on a train and when she arrived there she was angry because the train had to sop along the way to kick off a 'bum' and that made her late. She was unaware that the 'bum' was her brother, Dick. He said that he was freezing in a box car while she was warm and cozy in her furs in a coach car. Dick was 16 years od so this was about January/February of 1918/1919.
Verla 3rd married Everett Augustus 'Gus' Hinman (1886-1936) on May 12, 1919 in Henderson, Henderson Co, Kentucky. They had no children.
She met Oscar at the Star Store (a type of department store) on the elevator. The Star Store was located at the north east corner of West Washington St and West Street in downtown Indianapolis - now long gone. He worked on the second floor in carpeting.
Verla 4th married Oscar Wylie Ullom (1884-1968) in about 1938. This was Oscar's 2nd marriage. She always called him 'Mr Ullom'. They lived at 855 S Worth on the west side of Indianapolis just off Washington Street and she would drive him about three blocks to the bus stop and pick him up when he came home.
About 1949 they moved to Norris City, Illinois and bought a Mom & Pop grocery store. They lived next door to it. At the time of her death Oscar lived at 1411 Benton Street, Eldorado, Illinois.
When Verla died Oscar moved to California to live with a daughter.
Verla died at Anna State Hospital (asylum) at age 70 years 6 months 22 days of heart problem and bilateral bronchopneumonia. She apparently also had Alzheimer's disease. She was at the facility for 5 months and 16 days. (Her obituary states that she died following 10 months of illness.)
