Robert was born Melvin Battles Hefferman, the son of Emerson Lee and Gertrude J. (Dean) Hefferman. He was a country-western musician and changed his name to Robert Melvin "Mel" Steele in the early 1930s. He was married at least four times.

Robert M. Steele, 76, Rt. 3, Pomeroy, died Tuesday morning in Athens.
Mr. Steele was born May 19, 1907 at Franklin, Pa., the son of the late Lee and Elizabeth[sic] Steele[sic]. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth E. Steele, and one brother.
He was a mechanic for Rawlings Garage, Middleport and Meigs County Highway Department. He was a member of Flatwoods Methodist Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Broderick, and Belinda Connolloy, both of Pomeroy; two sons, Elton Steele, North Carolina and James Steele of Pennsylvania; one step-daughter, Karen Faver, Williamsport, Ohio; two sisters, Mary Newman, Michigan and Emma Duvey[sic], Warren, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Home. Burial will be in Meigs Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
