Nathaniel Merriman was born Aug 9, 1833 in Middletown, Holmes County, OH. Died Feb 21, 1892 . Nathaniel moved to Porter County, Indiana in infancy where he spent his youth. He married Olive Skinner. They started for the Rockies on May 1, 1860 settling first in Central City, Colorado, where he was appointed Post Master by President Lincoln. They located in Jefferson City, Jefferson Co. Montana in 1864. He was a member of the 1st Legislature of Colorado and both the 1st and 2nd Legislature of Montana. He was Post Master of Jefferson City, Jefferson Co. under President Grant. He was a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1885. He served several terms as County Recorder for Jefferson County, MT. " (My note: Olive Celestia Skinner Merriman and Nathaniel divorced. She married 2nd on Jan 27, 1877 Ferdinand Dell born 18 Aug 1839 who was a butcher. Olive and Ferdinand Dell bought a ranch in 1882 on the Madison not far from Logan, MT, where he and his wife had a beautiful home. Mr. Ferdinand Dell added to his original farm and he and his wife engaged in raising high bred cattle for market. He served for 5 yrs as Commissioner of Gallatin County MT. They moved to Bozeman, MT and spent a few years there, spending part of the winters in California. Later they decided to make their home in Long Beach but still retained some property in MT.Olive (Skinner) Merriman Dell was buried in Sunnyside Cemetery, Long Beach CA with her 2nd husband.)

Sec 1 That Nathaniel Merriman, Lewis Merriman, Elias Merriman, Allen T Axe and Albert Young their associates, successors and assigns, be and they are hereby constituted a body corporate and politic, to continue for the term of ten years by the name and style of the Valparaiso Gold and Silver Mining Company; and by that name and style shall be capable of making contracts, etc

They had 3 children: Robert Nathaniel 'Bert' Merriman born 15 July 1898 Butte Mt, , Charles Virgil Merriman born 27 Apr 1900, and Millard Phenimore Merriman born 26 July 1901.
