Evander was born the oldest son of James T. & Lucina (Watkins) Caldwell. Was with 11th Michigan Cavalry Co. A, rising to captain. Later with Co. K Colored Cavalry. Married Mary "Minnie" Dearing from Jackson Co. Contracted severe sunstroke and admitted to asylum in 1891. Left to mourn were his father of Detroit, wife and son Clarence James, daughter Muriel (Mrs. Pierce B. Mitchell), brothers David Oscar of Detroit, William John, Edward Byron and sister Helen Phylene Dunten, all of Jackson and Charles Albert of Kalamazoo.
